Bit.Trip ReRunner - A Sidescroller With Rhythm

Rhythm games have never fully resonated with me.  It is a genre of games that just has not appealed to me, no matter how many times I have tried games in the genre.  That mentality changed a bit when we received a review code for Bit.Trip ReRunner from the developer, Choice Provisions. When I first started Bit.Trip ReRunner, it was hard to ignore the beauty of the game.  The colors and backgrounds blend perfectly together as you progress through the levels.  It felt very much like Resogun, where everything has its place.  Along with the background, the game has a fantastic soundtrack that suits the game perfectly, even when you are not in rhythm with it.  Much like the background, it felt like every piece of the games music had a place and a purpose.

For me, the biggest strength of this game is in its design.  The game felt very approachable.  The developers bring the players along by introducing new moves  one at a time instead of all at once.  This lets players adjust to the patterns and how each move is incorporated into passing each  of the obstacles.  Eventually all the previously learned moves will be used to defeat an end level boss. For me, one of the big areas that make this game truly approachable for players that are not big on the rhythm genre is that the game does not punish you for missing the beat.  Unlike other games it felt like the rhythm aspect of the game was more of an enhancement to the games side scrolling design instead of the game being dependent on it.  For those that are trophy hunters, the trophy list for the game is pretty obtainable.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Bit.Trip ReRunner.  It is beautifully designed and can be played gamers of all levels.  It also has a pretty great price point for someone looking to pickup more of an indie game.  Also, as of this writing, those that have a Playstation Plus Premium subscription have access to a free trial of the game.
