Undertale - A Comical Trip Down The Underworld Rabbit Hole

Undertale, by independent developer Toby Fox, is comical, quirky, and absolutely amazing indie title available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.  Don’t let the graphics deter you from trying this game.  Toby Fox created a wonderful cast of character for this game.  We start off the game meeting a young boy who has fallen into the Underworld.  Your journey takes you from lands that seem simple, and black & white to lands that are vibrant and full of color.  Even the cast of character seem to follow this very rule as well.

The story and dialogue are well written.  The comedy that comes through in the dialogue is genuine and thoughtfully fits every character.  The pacing of the dialogue is fantastic.  To me, every bit of the way the story, dialogue, and pacing feels like Toby should be working for bigger studios.

The combat system is simple but surprisingly evolves as you equip different items.  It’s a timing based mechanic combined with dodging different patterns.  The most surprising part of the combat system, no enemy has to be harmed in the making of your journey.  Every combat has options of handling things non-violently which is refreshing during the day and age.  Toby even found ways of working in comical dialogue into the combat, whether you are taking a genuine defeating the enemy approach or the non-violent approach.

This game is truly a must play for any Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation Vita owner.  Toby has a great wonderful gaming experience that should be experienced by everyone.  Every part of this truly lives up to the high ratings the game has received on multiple media outlets.  I, for one, look forward to seeing what Toby gives us with Deltarune and his other future projects.
