[00:06:44] Now something came out today that xbox is going to be closing four studios
[00:06:51] and
[00:06:52] And you've got arcane austin which was the maker of redfall
[00:06:57] Um, which we all know the problems that redfall had with that. Um, they're still trying to figure out how they're gonna refund
[00:07:03] For the dlc that was set to come out. Um, it was just bad
[00:07:08] You had tango game works, which just released not too long ago hi-fi rush
[00:07:16] Which was
[00:07:17] acclaimed
[00:07:19] It's just such a bummer. Yeah, I've got um
[00:07:23] Roundhouse studios, uh, which was one of the studios behind elastrol's online
[00:07:28] And then alpha dog games, which was the maker of the mobile game mighty doom, which was a top down doom type game
[00:07:35] um
[00:07:37] Microsoft and phil spencer are getting heat for this
[00:07:40] And rightfully so because they just said they were going to start investing more money into tango
[00:07:46] Because of the success of hi-fi rush
[00:07:48] They also did evil
[00:07:50] um, rightfully so I mean, I mean it was
[00:07:54] Nominated for how many awards? I mean all that one another award like at some other game
[00:08:00] show
[00:08:02] You know like oh hey by the way, uh, you're closing down
[00:08:06] And they said some of the folks will get absorbed into it, but um
[00:08:10] One of the other reasons microsoft's getting
[00:08:12] Heat and and whatnot today is because they basically released a new controller that has like a fire theme to it
[00:08:18] And they said feel the burn
[00:08:21] You know go to go to the store and go pre-order the the new controller on the nose
[00:08:26] Hey, that is on the nose. You're firing people by giving a firing
[00:08:33] Like yeah like a fire controller so um, that's what I hope those folks land on their feet
[00:08:38] And you know some of them do get absorbed into Bethesda
[00:08:41] The rest, you know, I know some studios have already started putting out there that they're hiring
[00:08:45] So hopefully they can pick up something real quick. Um
[00:08:50] But again, this is
[00:08:51] This is fallout and I think a lot of people are like
[00:08:54] Going after like xbox and that but overall we've talked about this is that
[00:08:59] These studios and the publishers
[00:09:01] Basically thought covet numbers were going to be the new thing
[00:09:04] I mean come on we were all in our houses with disposable income because we can go anywhere, you know
[00:09:11] So all these studios ramped up. They started producing all these, you know more games and bring on more staff
[00:09:16] And they realized the money's not coming in
[00:09:18] The only company that I know of that didn't do it was nintendo
[00:09:21] They basically said this is going to be a blip on the radar. We're gonna keep doing our levels where we're at
[00:09:26] We're gonna release them on our schedule and so far. They're the only one that hasn't done any layoffs
[00:09:31] PlayStation xbox, you know
[00:09:33] Plus, you know 2k
[00:09:35] um
[00:09:36] bungeehead layoffs so

[00:16:38] A bit, you know, I get a bit of more nostalgia about like, you know, like roaming the map in the in the first one for play station

[00:16:53] Yeah, and the way they handle all the characters too, like they got really deep in like the story time

[00:16:58] They're like really like and all the like the voice actors and all the animation they put into it
[00:17:03] Like it's like it's like how I saw it in my head as a kid, you know, they're just dialing it out
[00:17:07] It's it's so good. I really love the opportunities
[00:17:10] It gives you to uh deep in the relationship with the characters too
[00:17:13] So so like the as far as like as long as they're in the green
[00:17:17] You know, you got a good relationship
[00:17:19] But I love that there's those opportunities and you can
[00:17:23] Have those like conversations with them and and you know form those bonds. So like
[00:17:28] It deepens it a little bit more and so like yeah, I'm really enjoying it
[00:17:32] And I'm I'm like going kind of mats route too. So I'm like

[00:41:27] This is a project that I had been in my head this whole this soul striker thing
[00:41:32] Was something that I first came up with back in like 2010. I think
[00:41:36] It was originally just a superhero. Yeah. Yeah, like right before we like I even broke into comics
[00:41:41] It's like an idea I was throwing around and it was originally
[00:41:44] The idea of a superhero like a singular superhero who fights like monsters
[00:41:48] I think like this show is supernatural but with the superhero kind of character
[00:41:52] Okay, cool. Yeah. Yeah, and and the idea that like you know like like um,
[00:41:56] Universal monsters like dracula universal monsters
[00:42:00] Werewolves vampires mummies something like that
[00:42:03] And um and so like I had this idea and the idea original idea was like a superhero who had this like sword made of sunlight that
[00:42:09] Killed vampires monsters and like the sword got passed down through generations
[00:42:13] Kind of like the phantom, you know, like a legacy kind of character
[00:42:16] And I had this idea
[00:42:19] Yeah, and I talked to Jason about it and we really like this idea and we were spitballing it for a while and
[00:42:25] Time went on right and I started working at at Aspen comics and dc
[00:42:29] And this just all kind of got put to the back burner
[00:42:32] And around 2019
[00:42:34] I got a I had gotten a switch the year before and a ps4 and I started getting back into video games
[00:42:40] Like I threw out college. I kind of took a break like from I stopped on ps2
[00:42:44] And I didn't really get back into it until like breath of the wild with the switch
[00:42:48] And when I yeah, and so like I started playing breath of the wild
[00:42:52] I started playing final fantasy 15 and at the same time
[00:42:54] I also started watching like all the
[00:42:57] Animes that I loved when I was a kid like Gundam wing and dragon balls
[00:43:00] Like it's just started like reengaging with all this stuff
[00:43:03] And I called Jason up and I was like, dude, do you remember the sun that we that character that we were doing?
[00:43:07] Like I have this idea to change it around completely and make like our version of
[00:43:12] Uh, like a like a like like an rpg like like like like like think of like a team book
[00:43:20] Yeah, so like think like X man like we were talking about before like making like a wide cast of characters
[00:43:24] That like they're all unique. They're diverse. They'll have different points of view and like
[00:43:28] There there's not just like one singular character in the book
[00:43:30] It's like like they're all the main characters and we and like I just thought of like like what how would it be like if I could make my own
[00:43:38] Like rpg game, you know, like but as a comic book and then like just kind of blending all these things together that I love growing up
[00:43:44] And so we came up with this idea called battle chronicle soul striker and it's it is a
[00:43:49] Like it is a vast epic
[00:43:52] it all takes place in a fictional world and it's it has a
[00:43:56] Real like character it's character driven with heart and like some really good messaging about like morality in it and
[00:44:02] Yeah, and if I'd love to read you the the overall pitch here the uh the elevator pitches. Yeah
[00:44:07] Yeah, as so as war erupts across the battle scar land of impera
[00:44:11] The reluctant princess roxy sakae and her rookie soul striker knights must band together to reclaim their kingdom and combat the
[00:44:17] Fomorian armies of dracool that threaten to cast the world into eternal darkness on their journey
[00:44:22] They're going to reconcile truths from a concealed past master the mysteries of the solar key and unite peoples of disparate nations
[00:44:29] they fight to bring salvation to their world
[00:44:31] And yeah, it's basically them um going on this
[00:44:36] this quest to save their kingdom and
[00:44:39] find uh how they can bring peace to this world and seeing how
[00:44:45] What you know, it may be being disillusioned a little bit with like the institutions that you're fighting for and like maybe
[00:44:51] Who your enemies aren't necessarily bad and maybe like the things you're fighting for may not necessarily be good
[00:44:55] and how do you reconcile with when you
[00:44:59] Find these small dilemmas. How do you cut your path forward to to following and doing the right thing? You know, and uh, yeah
[00:45:05] Yeah, and adjacent. Well, what no. Yeah. No, I just that's that's my favorite part. So, uh
[00:45:11] What does it mean to be a hero right when the things that you've believed in your whole life?
[00:45:16] Gets turned on its head right? What does it mean to be the one like the chosen one or the the special?
[00:45:21] you know, um when your purpose
[00:45:25] is you know, uh
[00:45:27] Different or is gonna is is gonna create challenges for the world around you and so, you know, it's about
[00:45:36] Doing what's what's truly right being a pillar of light
[00:45:39] It within a war and like like like I'm saying
[00:45:42] When you look at the those the rpgs, especially you look at things like not just final fantasy but things like cross trigger and
[00:45:50] you know, uh
[00:45:52] Other beings from that time there was these really complex in-depth stories, right?
[00:45:57] And so we really wanted to look at that and look at Saturday morning cartoons
[00:46:00] And look at those, you know, when you've got monsters and good guys and bad guys and kind of turning those tropes on its head a little bit
[00:46:07] Yeah, and the the primary
[00:46:10] Like so like the primary factions of the world is the ideas of the kingdom of Akari is this world
[00:46:15] And the planet's called in para the world in para and
[00:46:18] It's split into two factions just humans and this race of monstrous like creatures called femorians and the femorians are
[00:46:24] They're their vampires. They're werewolves. They're demons. They're gargoyles
[00:46:27] they're all these kind of like creatures that thrive off night and shadow and they
[00:46:33] They're immortal beings that the only thing that can kill them is sunlight and so this nation of akari they've
[00:46:39] Mastered their their royal family has mastered the power of the solar key
[00:46:43] And they've been able to weaponize and harness sunlight and they've
[00:46:46] Sort of siphoned it off into their elite soldiers called soul strikers
[00:46:49] And they all have these unique swords that are bonded to them through the solar key
[00:46:53] And it's it's like the thing that can kill femorians
[00:46:56] And so this world is in this sort of turmoil where
[00:47:00] The the femorians feel very disenfranchised and they've got they've kind of been beaten off
[00:47:05] Like knocked off into the outer rims of
[00:47:08] Of the the realm where there's it's like not very fertile land
[00:47:12] And they're starting to survive and the kingdom of akari seems to have everything
[00:47:15] But you know these monsters they kill people and they kill innocent people and they they feed on them
[00:47:20] And it's this this internal struggle between these two nations is where we start the the book and
[00:47:25] Where and how this
[00:47:27] How the the boiling point swords are so speak is in book one where it sort of tips over and kind of sets all our characters onto their adventure

[00:48:30] From an economic standpoint has really locked down
[00:48:33] That resource and so all the technology in the world is is powered through this one resource
[00:48:39] And that's where you know we talked about other parts of the world like the femorans and like other
[00:48:45] Nations in the world that have been
[00:48:47] Uh, you know they're they're they've been locked out of that resource

[00:48:55] Borrowed some of his inspiration from shinra then
[00:49:01] You know, it's funny is I actually that's so funny. I never actually even thought about that when I was
[00:49:05] um because it's not it's not it's not quite like
[00:49:09] The the idea of like demaco being like the little lifeblood and final fantasy. It's it's not so much of that
[00:49:14] It's more like it's it's not like it's being drained. It's more of a this thing that's being uh, hoarded
[00:49:19] Um, and it's it's in this world
[00:49:22] There's there's a solar key and shadow key and it's this equilibrium of the two that kind of keeps the world in harmony
[00:49:28] And the femorians being the ones who thrive on shadow that is a it's less about
[00:49:35] Food controls like it less about hoarding it and more about how much of it is being controlled by one side or the other
[00:49:41] So let me ask you how much I know you guys are kick starting book one
[00:49:46] And whatnot how much of the story have you actually kind of?
[00:49:50] At least loosely storyboarded out or or have written out beyond one
[00:49:55] Yeah, so book one is a 52 page book uh
[00:49:58] 52 pages of story 64 pages total because we've got some back matters some sketches and some pinups and behind the scenes stuff

[00:50:09] So each one between 48 52 pages and we have the outline done for the whole thing
[00:50:15] This whole first book is completely penciled and inked and written and um

[00:59:33] Adventure, but like it's adventure that makes you think with also like brings you right back to when you know
[00:59:38] You're staying up late watching tsunami, you know, like watching dragon balls. Yeah, you know, like that's like that's totally the vibe
